Who is Ronny Roels?
Inspiration, view on art, exhibitions and competitions.
I was born in Wetteren in 1957. From a very early age , I felt the urge to draw and give my imagination free reign. Later I started oil-painting. For me, art school was a logical option. Consequently, I studied art in higher education from 1979 to 1984.
Two years of classes in drawing and painting from life during my studies have determined my preference for the human naked form.
The naked human body is still an endless source of inspiration to me. It shows us the passing of time and points out our own mortality. My works wants to be a tribute to the naked human form.
Every week I draw from life at the home of artist, Toon Bogaert, my former teacher.
A painting should not need explaining. People should be able to recognise what the work shows and understand it immediately. That is why I want to paint nudes as realistically as possible.
Can it be wrong to deliberately show the beauty of the naked female form, even if it is done in a provocative way?
Are naked women always objects of lust? Are paintings of them always expressions of that lust? What emotions do such paintings arouse in the viewer?
‘Nude’ and ‘naked’ are words with a lot of connotations. Which of these surface, however, depends entirely on the viewer and his perception.
Art is beauty, but – as the saying goes – beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Whatever form it comes in, art touches people, stirs emotions, makes people think. A work of art should affect people. My artworks are depictions of my fantasies and parts of my hidden desires that I want to share with the viewer.
Even today, nudity is still a taboo to a lot of people. But this only strengthens my determination to continue working. I still have a lot of dreams and ideas that need to be given form.
What drives me?
Painting is a process of continuous growth and progress. Creating something new gives an intense satisfaction and feeling of happiness. Above all, however, painting is an addiction, an obsession, a passion. And there is also the element of recognition. To be accepted, understood and recognised in the work you do is what all people seek, whether they are artists or not.
For 17 years, a busy professional life made it impossible for me to be active in the field of art. However, the passion, desire and urge to return to painting and to be creative became too strong. I gave up my main job as a technical assistant in a 3-shift system and my second job – I used to be self-employed – to do weekend work. My wife, Nadine Bulté, fully supported me in this decision.
Now i can devote my entire week to drawing and painting.
